Manchester City have completed the signing of Darius Vassell from Aston Villa for £2million.

The 25-year-old striker has agreed personal terms and committed to a four-year contract after completing a medical on Tuesday.

A statement on City's official club website read: "He is likely to make his first-team debut in one of the coming weekend's two friendly fixtures, away at either Stoke City or Sheffield Wednesday."

Vassell will be hoping to kick-start his career at Eastlands after a miserable time since his decisive penalty miss in England's European Championship shoot-out with Portugal last summer.

He scored just one Premiership goal in 10 games before breaking his ankle against Fulham which sidelined him for four months and when he returned he was unable to inspire Villa to a European place - they finished 10th.

With Vassell's arrival, manager Stuart Pearce can call on three strikers who have all played for England. Andy Cole and Robbie Fowler have also won caps for their country.

Vassell could make his bow for City on Saturday at Championship side Stoke.
