Thistle come out on top despite relegation

Its a shame that Thistle find themselves relegated before they manage to put
in their best performance of the season. Blunham Village were the visitors to
Thistle on Saturday afternoon, already 6 3 victors in the reverse fixture
earlier in the season. The Blunham manager spoke confidently about his sides
chances before the game, finding humour in the fact that their opponents threw
away a three goal lead at Potton who only fielded ten men.

His confident manner was justified as his side went one nil up after twenty
minutes, against the run of play. The usually reliable Adam Geary mis hit a
clearance straight to the Blunham forward, who took the ball around him and
slotted into the empty net. Thistle up until then had dominated their opponents
with some good passing football and were unlucky not to be three up.

Ten minutes later, Geary hit a poor goal kick that was easily picked up by the
same forward who drilled his shot past the keeper to put the visitors two goals
ahead. Thistle were on the back foot for the remainder of the half but Blunham
could not find another goal that would have effectively killed off the tie at
the break.

Not finding the extra goal proved costly for Blunham, as within twenty seconds
of the restart, Thistle had pulled a goal back. Neil Hannam hit a ball down the
Thistle left and John Banks swung over a peach of a cross for Scott Bayles to
score at the near post on his first team debut. Bayles relentless running in
the first half had frustrated the pot bellied toothless centre half that was
marking him, leading to a war of words that lasted a good five minutes.

Within ten minutes, Scott Hannam played in Nick Payne who found himself through
on goal with only the keeper to beat. The captain kept his nerve and placed the
ball into the corner giving the keeper no chance.

A minute later, It was same old story for Thistle, as the good work in getting
level was undone by poor marking. A hopeful ball over the top found Geary
running out of his goal to sweep up. The Blunham forward was quicker however and
managed to hold up play just long enough for his strike partner to arrive
unmarked into the middle and score with a header from the resulting cross.

Thistle to their credit did not capitulate, as has been the case many times
thus far. They pushed on for the equaliser and it justly came when Payne
stumbled over himself and kneed the ball into the net to draw the home side
level.

This goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Blunham and from then on Thistle
dominated with attack after attack. The winner came when a cross into the box
ten minutes from time looked destined for the onrushing Paul Guthrie to meet and
crash home, however winger Craig Cook ghosted in ahead of him and smashed the
ball into the corner for a deserved winner.

Thistle even had another goal disallowed for a dubious offside but they held on
for a deserved victory.

Manager Scott Hannam stated after the game The boys played really well and
battled hard for most of the match. We had a little lapse just before half time
but we showed great character and spirit to come back from two down and win the
game against more experienced players.

Thistle play their last home game of the season this Saturday against Westoning
and it could also be the last game at the lofty Twinwoods ground, as there is
talk of them moving to Ampthill.
