Riverside Inn FC in shock 2-0 defeat.

The Division 1 title race was blown wide open this weekend when League leaders Riverside Inn FC were beaten 2-0 at home by AFC Ocean Reserves, this is Ocean Reserves second big scalp of the season as they also beat title challengers Ashford International Sports Club by the same margin earlier in the season and with Woodchurch also beating Ruckinge Utd 6-0 the top four have all got much closer together which could spell late charges from both Ocean & Woodchurch who both have the Riverside & Ashford to play.

Both sides started fairly well and the game was contested strongly all over a pitch which was bobbly and tough to get any kind of passing game going, resulting in a lot of long ball football on a very windy day. The visitors were the first to get a shot on target when a speculative volley from 30 yards out held up in the wind and came crashing down on the Riverside Inn crossbar but the ever alert Tom Cornell was out quick to smother any potential rebound. Riverside Inn Midfielder Stuart Kingsnorth then went close with a glancing header at the post from a Guy Farmer long throw. Both sides continued to create chances from wide areas with plenty of crosses being putting in to both boxes but the two goalkeepers were up to the task claiming anything in the air. The sides went in to half time with the score at 0-0.

After the break the homeside seemed to have woken up with the introduction of pacey wingers Adam Mansfield & Richard Long they began to probe the AFC Ocean backline more frequently. Right Back and eventual Man of the Match Grant Moffat almost put his side 1-0 up when his 25 yard freekick fizzed past the bottom of the right hand post just an inch from finding its target. Then the game turned for the Riverside Inn when goalkeeper Tom Cornell was left unexplainably injured after taking a goal kick that seemed to strain his right knee leaving the young keeper in severe pain and with minimum mobility but he bravely battled on.
Ocean Reserves then seized their chance pilling the pressure on to the struggling keeper who somehow managed to keep the visiting side at bay but with no let up in the attacks and the homeside already missing several key players the Ocean pressure finally broke their resistance with a long ball over the top of the defence it was a straight race between the Ocean forward and the struggling keeper with only one outcome possible the forward latched on to the ball and chipped the stranded keeper to make the score 1-0. A second goal was then not far behind as the home side surged forward Ocean launched a quick counter attack down the left hand side, working the ball inside the box and crossing to the far post heading home from close range to make it 2-0 with 15 minutes to go. The home side however did not give up and continued to try and get back on terms Adam Mansfield twice went close once with a close range header from a Gary Swift cross and the second after he beat the offside trap perfectly getting one on one with the Ocean keeper but his shot hit the foot of the post and bounced clear. Chris Clements & Guy Farmer both had headed chances blocked from a corner & a freekick respectively. The game ended 2-0 with this being the first time in two seasons that the Riverside Inn have failed to score a goal in a match. With Goalkeeper Tom Cornell now injured and with Forward Guy Farmer also picking up a broken toe during the game they join Sean Knight (Fractured Ankle), Ben King (Broken Leg) & Steven Adams (Fractured Elbow) all on the ever increasing injury list. The Riverside Inn now travel to AFC Ocean Reserves next week to play them in the League Cup and will surely be out to exact revenge for this result.
