DAISY HILL 2 ECCLESHALL 1

Saturday 13th January 2007
North West Counties Football League
Daisy Hill 2 Eccleshall 1
Eccleshall got stuck in the mud as their promotion hopes took a dive, in Bolton, at bottom club Daisy Hill. On a heavy pitch both teams took time to adjust to the conditions. It was Daisy Hill who struck the first blow when after 12 minutes Daisy Hill took the lead. A slip in the Eccleshall defence allowed Dominic Shinks possession and with the Eccleshall defence left flat footed placed his shot into the net. Daisy Hill were giving as good as they got and Shinks again came close but a fine save from Dave Kociak, in the Eccleshall goal, prevented any more damage. Eccleshall had their chances with Steve Millington putting a chance wide and Russell Dematteo forcing a brilliant save from Scott Moore, in the Daisy Hill goal. Oliver Warrender then had a shot cleared off the line following a good cross form Russell Dematteo. The last word in the half went to the home side with Dave Kociak saving well from Rob Haughton. Half-time 1-0
Eccleshall equalised on 48 minutes, after constant pressure at the start of the half. Russell Dematteo creating the opening for Jimmy Dunn to finish in style with a superb shot. Eccleshall survived a penalty appeal when Craig Hatton appeared to be obstructed but the referee waved play-on. Eccleshall then dominated for a large spell with Daisy Hill rarely getting out of their half. Unfortunately for Eccleshall the ball failed to find the net. With Daisy Hill riding their luck a clearance out of defence caught Eccleshall square. The ball finding Dominic Shinks mid-way in the Eccleshall half to race away and beat Dave Kociak from 20 yards, with 15 minutes remaining. Eccleshall made substitutions as players were thrown forward. With five minutes left Russell Dematteo made his way clear of the Daisy hill defence and into the box and has he drew the keeper was pulled back by the shirt. However, with everyone in the ground expecting a penalty the referee waved the game on. To give credit to the home side, who battled hard with ten men behind the ball, they nearly sneaked another when a break-away by Danny Williams saw his shot hit the Eccleshall post. With only one win in the last four games, although still in touch with the promotion places, Eccleshalls manager Mark Askey was left bemused by the sudden inconsistent form of his side.
