HONOURS EVEN IN PROMOTION BATTLE

Saturday 3rd February 2007
North West Counties Division 2
Eccleshall 1 Padiham 1
Eccleshall gained a well deserved draw against promotion rivals Padiham. Five players were missing from the previous line up but managed to secure Michael Owen and Dean Ennion on loan from Kidsgove Athletic. A debut was also given 16 year old Steven Brunt.
Padiham made the early running but good defensive work by Charlie Reeves, Michael Owen and Jon Mills were keeping them at bay until the festive spirit over came Eccleshall again when they gifted the visitors with an opening goal after 12 minutes. Dave Abel in the Eccleshall goal made a poor clearance found opponent Matt Woods who quickly released Ed ONeil to send a curling shot over the stranded Abel. Eccleshall were trying to make head-way but found it hard against strong opponents. Jimmy Dunn came close for the home side but his shot was well saved by Gavin King. Michael Machin then wasted a good chance shooting straight at King. Dean Ennion then tested King who turned his effort away. The deserved equaliser came just before half-time when Michael Machin was too quick for the Padiham defence before rounding the keeper to fire into an empty net. Half-time 1-1
Eccleshall maintained their pressure and Mark McDonald fired an effort just over. Padiham tried to respond but found Eccleshalls defence determined there were no more free gifts. Eccleshall were robbed of an equaliser when good work from Ian Banks and Dean Owen sent Michael Machin away only for him to be brought down outside the box by Damian Ingham who was immediately red carded. Eccleshall maintained the pressure but were unable to break Padiham down their 10 men.
